Ingredients

  • 7 large, dried anchovies
  • 6x8 inch dried kelp
  • 950g of water
  • 110g of red pepper paste
  • 6g of red pepper powder
  • 12g of sugar
  • 3 green onions
  • 450g of Korean rice cakes
  • 2 hard-boiled eggs (optional)
  • 200g of fish cakes (optional)

  • 1 small bowl

Tteokbokki Recipe

Directions

  • Remove the dried anchovies’ heads and intestines.
  • Then, place the anchovies, dried kelp, and water into the shallow pot.
  • Bring it to a boil and boil for 15 minutes over medium to high heat.
  • Meanwhile, mix the red pepper paste, red pepper powder, and sugar in a small bowl. Set aside.
  • Cut each green onion into 3-inch-long pieces.
  • Remove the anchovies and kelp from the pot, then add the Korean rice cakes, red pepper mixture, green onion, hard-boiled eggs, and fish cakes.
  • Gently stir once it starts boiling and continue stirring until the Korean rice cakes soften, and the sauce thickens.
  • If the rice cake doesn’t soften within 15 minutes, add water, and continue stirring. Remember that frozen Korean rice cakes will take longer to soften than fresh ones.
  • Lastly, turn off the heat and serve immediately.
