Our spicy tokwa recipe is a great vegan alternative to the classic Filipino dish, Adobong Tokwa. “Tokwa” is tofu in Filipino, and in our recipe, the tofu is pan-fried, mixed with a variety of vegetables and coated with a spicy yet savoury sauce. An easy to put together meal, our spicy tofu dish is best enjoyed with a steaming bowl of rice.

Ingredients

  • 1 250g pack firm tofu, cut into small cubes
  • Cooking oil to fry the tofu
  • 3 tbsp cooking oil
  • 5 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 red onions, sliced
  • 1 tbsp chilli flakes
  • 2 red bell peppers, sliced thinly
  • 2 tbsp white sugar
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce

Directions

  • Fry the tofu cubes in a pre-heated frying pan. Set aside.
  • In another pan, heat oil and fry the garlic and onions until crispy.
  • Add the chilli flakes, bell peppers, sugar, hoisin sauce and oyster sauce. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Add the fried tofu and gently mix.
  • Serve hot.

Cooking Tips for Tokwa

You can elevate our spicy tokwa recipe by freezing the tofu to create a meatier texture. Place the whole tofu block in the freezer overnight and thaw it at room temperature before cooking. Make sure to squeeze the tofu to remove the excess liquid.
